Painting, for me, is the challenge of recreating color as I see it--a sudden burst caused by dramatic lighting, or the subtlety of atmospheric effects. I try to push the painting to the point of having a feeling of life or movement--whether it is a figure, landscape of still life--it must come "alive" .
Elizabeth Allen received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1972 where she spent her last year studying the Italian masters in Rome. She continued with a four year period of study at the Art Students League of New York where she gained a classical foundation in painting the figure, portraiture and still life. Her primary teacher was Ted Seth Jacobs, followed by David Leffell, Nelson Shanks, Richard Goetz and others. After moving to Vermont 20 years ago, with her husband, Keith Gaylord and daughters Cathryn and Grace, Elizabeth Allen (Gaylord) applied her training in color and light to the beautiful landscape around her home. She studied the teachings of Gloucester painter, Emile Gruppe and uses his color palette to this day.
Her award winning paintings have been published in 2 books by International Artist Magazine, "How to Paint Landscapes" and "How to Paint Still Life and Florals". Her work can be found in many private and corporate collections both nationally and internationally. She is a member of the Art Students League of New York
