I find my inspiration in trying to capture the personality of a live model and in the limitless combinations of forms and colors in still life. My satisfaction comes from developing observations necessary to enable me to see into a person, to capture their spirit, or to interpret a still life and attempt to give it new vitality. The best result is when I can bring all the elements together to create a painting that someone else may find enriching.
Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Jo earned an undergraduate degree in English literature from the University of Washington and then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where she worked as a legal assistant and then a court reporter. While raising her two children she realized she needed a creative outlet and began oil painting as a hobby. Over the years she has studied and taken workshops with many professional artists, namely Linda Harris, Bob Gerbracht, Ted Goerschner, Charles Sovek, Ken Auster, Matt Smith, Randy Sexton and recently Mike Linstrom, and each has influenced her technique and vision. She is a student of art history and for many years was an active board member and volunteer with the San Jose Museum of Art, during which time she was a docent to schoolchildren, bringing her love and knowledge of art into their classrooms and teaching them how to "read" a painting. Today Jo paints at Art Works, a studio in San Jose, with a group of painters interested in figurative and portrait painting using live models. She also paints daily in her home studio and receives much encouragement from her family. What began as a hobby has blossomed into a life-focusing activity that provides both an intellectual as well as spiritual gratification.
