My work is inspired by nature. I aim to infuse my paintings with truth as well as my own artistic interpretations. I want the end result to be pleasing to the eye, a culmination of my technique and the subject matter I have chosen. I choose my subject matter for a variety of reasons: to explore color, form, for an overall theme or mood, and to express our relationship to nature.

JOSH ELLIOTT

"A successful painting, to me, represents nature's truth filtered through the artist"

Born in Great Falls, MT in 1973, Josh Elliott and his family now live in Helena. Elliott draws his inspiration from nature and learned the importance of painting outdoors from his father, wildlife artist Steve Elliott.

The benefits of painting outdoors are great, and every landscape painter needs to return to the source if they wish to improve their studio paintings. In this plein air workshop, you will focus on two elements that will really improve your paintings: simplification and dynamic composition. You will learn how to simplify by seeing in shapes, and how to add some "punch" to your picture by creating a composition that your eye can travel through. The instructor will demonstrate and discuss tools, set up, choosing a subject, composition, and finishing your painting. There will be individual attention and a group critique on the last day. Portable easel and transportation required.
