Biography

A sixth generation Texan, Kathy Tate was born and grew up in the countryside of north central Texas.

Her interest in art began at a very early age while watching her father draw. She quietly cultivated this interest and later studied art and drafting in college.

In 1973 at the age of 20 she took her first oil painting class with New Mexico impressionist Gaitha Browning. At every opportunity, she continued to refine her technique while raising three sons and helping her husband on their dairy.

"Although I have worked with many mediums, oil is definitely my favorite. The colors, textures and 'feel' are like no other medium ...they are very forgiving and tend to have a luminosity not found with other paints. I love painting light, shadow, and reflections ...it's always a challenge to achieve a proper balance of each."

There are many artists that have impacted Tate's work. Major influences have been Robert Summers' use of color and George Hallmark's rendering of sunlight and shadow. She has studied with outstanding artists such as C.W. Mundy, Martin Grelle, and Richard Goetz.

In addition to painting, Kathy also teaches private oil painting classes and is on the roster of artists in the Artist in Residence Program with the Texas Commission on the Arts.

Tate has exhibited in the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition, Night of Artists Show and Sale, Mountain Oyster Club's Show and Sale, Bosque Conservatory Classic, and many others. She is a member of Oil Painters of America, American Women Artists, and signature member of American Plains Artists.

Kathy and her husband, Johnny, currently reside near Stephenville, Texas.
