The Artist Says:
The way light and shadow are mechanisms for seeing both subtley and brilliance....on the planes of a face, the petals of a flower, the crest and roll of a wave, is absolute magic. Put together, in a beautiful design, with poetry of line, and a bit of mystery, my hope is that my guided hand and mind together in the expression of paintings may serve as a conduit for viewers to see and experience this same subtle and brilliant beauty and magic.
Collectors Say:
"I bought your painting to give my daughter so it now hangs in her living room in Brooklyn, N.Y. and she loves it and the way you use light."
Dealers Say:
"Mary characteristically draws the attention into the foreground of each image, bathing it in light, while shadows warmly darken her backgrounds. During the editing of this post, one of our dear customers fell in love with "Orchids and Hydrangeas" and decided to give it a good home!"
Other Artists Say:
"Your light in the illustrated still life is breathtaking. Keep up the good work...you are touching the world in such a wonderful way."

Biography
"My heart beats fast at the way light plays across beautiful forms...the planes of the face, the petals of a flower, the sharp, clean edge of a sunstruck wave, building or tree, and the soft diffusion of light through the atmosphere. The heart-racing joy and excitement I feel when I stand at the easel, pastel, brush or pencil in hand will often cause my hands to tremble in anticipation. I tell myself to breathe deeply, be calm, and to be a channel--simply a vehicle--for the expression that will follow. And then I utter a humble prayer of thanksgiving for the privilege this calling."Mary was born in Salt Lake City in 1962 and grew up in Oregon and Washington. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington, she worked for several years as cartographer designing maps. A wonderful journey as the mother of triplets followed and kindled a newfound joy, energy, inspiration and awareness, which prompted a deeper pursuit into the world of fine art and the study of classical representational painting.
She specializes in painting from life, whether it is the still life, the human figure, or en plein aire in the outdoors, preferring to interpret the subject in real time. Most of her richly colored, dramatic pastel and oil paintings are completed alla prima in order to capture the immediacy, inspiration and poetry of her subjects.
