When my fortieth birthday was approaching I wanted it to be the beginning of something new and challenging so I asked my husband to give me an easel and painting supplies for my birthday. In my other lives as a biochemist and a full-time mom and homemaker I had often envisioned making paintings of my coworkers or my children so that I could capture and immortalize something special about them. I had never done any art beyond some drawing but the notion had taken hold in my mind. This seemed like a good time to begin.My paintings are representational. Many of the landscapes are of a family farm in western North Carolina, an inspirational place for an artist. The domestic scenes are usually taken from my own life and family. Recently I have become interested in painting imaginary scenes, but I still like to make them look realistic. This gives me the chance to illustrate life in an alternative universe, one which I would like to visit sometimes. I keep a running notebook full of my reflections about people and events so that I can refer to it for possible painting subjects.
The interest and challenge that art has brought to my life make me rank my fortieth birthday and birthday present as one of the best.
