Biography

Roger is the past President 2004-2006 and Artist Member of the Tucson Plein Air Painters Society, and he is an Associate Member of the Oil Painters of America. He is also a member of the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico, and a member of the Friends of Western Art.

Roger studied art at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, the Pima Community College, Tucson, Arizona, the Tucson Museum of Art School, Tucson, Arizona, and The Drawing Studio, Tucson, Arizona. He has also studied with Phil Starke and Ken Auster. He has developed is own unique painting style through years of painting and drawing. Known for his bold use of color and expressive brushwork, Roger continues to excite his collectors with his signature painting style.

"My work is about expressing the spirit and energy I sense in the landscape. Painting on location provides a spontaneous and emotional response to the land and the presence we make as inhabitants. In the studio, I abstract this responce even further into power shapes, colors, and symbols. In both cases, I leave out the details and allow you the viewer to fill those in with your own experience and imagination. If I have done my job as an artist utilizing color, light, form and composition, and you sense the spirit of things unseen, than I have succeeded. A Native American friend once said to me, "that to Native Peoples, everything has a spirit, the air we breathe, trees, animals-even rocks", when she commented on seeing the shape of a bear in the rocks I had painted. If you can see the bear in the rocks, or in some way your spirit is moved to soar, then we are speaking the same language".

Roger's paintings have been in many national and regional shows, including the Oil Painters of America Western Regional, 2006, and the Plein Air New Mexico Invitational 2005, which resulted in his work being published in the hardcover book, Plein Air New Mexico, 2006, of the Jack Richeson Fine Art Series. He has won numerous awards for his paintings including the American Artist Magazine Competition for Landscape in 1990. His work is widely collected and is in many private and corporate collections.
