Biography

Although always a person with creative talents,Stanton did not discover his hidden talent to draw and paint until later in life. All prior endeavors were entrepreneurial in nature...owner of a cross-country ski area in Vermont and then custom home builder. Artistic pursuits prior to fine art painting were in ceramics and wood carving.

Commuunicating with his artist mother by letters, he would draw small pictures of birds on his envelopes for her amusement. Surprised at the quality of the drawings, his mother offered Stanton encouragement to go further with his "doodling," as he describes it.

Spending hours every day drawing, painting and studying art books and magazines, he developed skills in painting wildlife, landscapes, seascapes and portraits.

He describes his style as a combination of impressionism and realism. "I believe in painting in a way that communicates the message that this is a painting. I like to see brush strokes everywhere."

Working in watercolor and oil, he has been creating compositions from his mind, drawing on memories from the past, or certain aspects of a photograph as inspiration. Allaben also paints en plein air to develop reference material for future works. The south Carolina lowcountry offers a wealth of scenery to develop ideas from as well. "I don't want to restrict my subject matter to local scenes, however. I wish to paint scenes from other parts of the world too as I travel."

Aside from having a mother who is an artist, Stanton is related to George Catlin, the famous Indian artist. He discovered this connection when working on the family genealogy years ago.

The artist recently had one of his watercolor paintings accepted into the 14th Southeast Regional Juried Fine Arts Exhibition sponsored by the Arts And Design Society of Fort Walton Beach, Florida. He was also just honored with an invitation to participate as a displaying artist at the 2007 Florence Biennale, a prestigious exhibition held in Florence, Italy every two years.

Allaben's paintings are shown in four South Carolina galleries. He is seeking representation in other parts of the country, so gallery representatives are encouraged to contact him.
