Biography

I was born in the mountains of North Carolina and grew up in coastal Maine and Massachusetts. Boston's great museums were a trolley ride away, and summers were spent on the rocky, pine-covered coast of my grandmother's island life. My great-grandmother Caroline Thurber, a well-known portrait painter of her day, influenced my life through my father's stories of her grand studio on Tappan Street.

During my first career as an art teacher, I discovered New Mexico through a colleague who had worked and lived on the Zuni reservation. New Mexico was the catalyst for a major breakthrough in my art. Until my early trips to New Mexico, I drew in black and white and sepia tones, and was influenced by formal New England art traditions. In my first journeys to the Southwest I was stunned by the color, light, and landscape that filled my senses! I fell madly in love with New Mexico, and was thrilled to discover the world of art that was thriving in the West. I began to incorporate these new visual and sensual experiences into my work, and gradually moved into my heart's goal of painting landscapes. I moved to New Mexico to stay in 1995 and have been painting the home of my heart ever since.

I think that beauty is all around, all the time, though it sometimes takes a conscious desire to perceive it.

Sunlight warming my shoulders, a breeze ruffling my hair, magic hanging over the mountains and mesas all open my Spirit. That is why I paint nature. I am in love. Art gives me access to my center, a way of coming back to my Soul where I feel at peace, whole, alive, and somehow bigger than my everyday self. I am living a luxurious life as I bridge my art into creation.

Ari, my handsome black dog, has spent most of his adult life in my studio and out walking and painting with me. While I paint, he roams. Eventually he finds a place in the sun…or on a hot day, in the shade…to rest. While I travel the inner realms of painting colors, feelings, and vision, he watches and guards my peace.

It surprises me that something so personal, restorative, and private as painting is also something meant to be shared. I love inviting people to look at my work, watch their responses, and talk about their experiences. As someone tells me what they see and feel, I often realize that we have gone to the same place. And it is a wonderful place meant to be shared again and again.
