Biography
Steve studied Art at The Art Institute of Boston. He studied illustration with Norman Baer, who worked in the Boston school tradition. His career centered around commercial art and graphics for many years.Steve worked primarily in the studio from still lifes and photographs until 1996 when he began painting in plein air. This approached had a direct effect on improving his sensitivty to color and values under natural light. In a recent
article written by Springfield Union News Art Critic Gloria Russell, "Steve Calcasola demonstrated in one sensitive, unwashed landscape the breadth of his talent.
Calcasola's paintings have won Best in Show and he has recieved other awards and complimentary recognition of his works. He has shown his work in national juried shows as far away as Arizona and South Carolina to his native New England. He has been juried into the Academic Artist Association of Springfield Mass, and in 2005 became and elected member of The Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society. His love of the outdoors is evident in the choice of subject matter. The changing character of the New England countryside inspires him and presents him with wonderful challenges that he is eager to meet.
He currently has a studio with The Artist at Indian Orchard Mills in Indian Orchard Massachusetts. You may also see his work on line at www.mindsisland.com.
